Matèria: Giulia Marchi

Located in the neighbourhood of San Lorenzo in Rome, Matèria specializes in contemporary photographic practices and visual culture. The gallery presents and supports the work of emerging and established artists through a curated program of exhibitions and events that engage with photography’s evolving contemporary dialects. Since April 2015, the gallery has hosted 12 extended exhibitions, numerous events and artist features, and participated in a selection of art fairs and pop-up exhibitions across Europe. At the fair, the gallery is presenting works by Giulia Marchi (b. 1976 in Rimini). Following her studies in literature, she started experimenting with pinhole cameras in 2006. She found something very fascinating in this simple approach. The imagery is created through different time exposures, detailing and referencing the passing of time and the poetic, uninterrupted dialogue between sky and earth. The duality of this approach once again defines the cornerstone of Marchi’s practice, one divided between the tangible and the abstract.
